While I enjoyed the first novel immensely, I may have to wait a bit before tackling the next two books. If you are really, really interested in the technical aspects of colonising mars, you may love this book - or maybe you won't - I'm interested, but I was so bored that I didn't care. Mars continues the tradition of Martain movies, since Rocketship X-M directed by Kurt Neumann in 1950, which have made us wonder how we might explore Mars and whether there is life lurking there. Author Kim Stanley Robinson was born in Waukegan, Illinois, but mainly grew up in Southern California. That’s because I really loved this book. Red Mars is the first in a trilogy of Mars novels, followed by Green Mars and Blue Mars – each detailing a different stage in the evolution of the planet from a dusty crater to a water rich planet that can sustain human life. Robinson's Mars is realistically cold, arid, and lifeless; and even before they reach the planet, his first hundred scientist- colonists are hotly debating how Mars should be terraformed.
